Friday Banger 4/27 - Rubik, the Amazing Cube
"Why they needed to make a puzzle cube into a mysterious goblin pursued by an angry fisherman is anybody's guess, but our guess is probably cocaine" - Austin, on "Rubik, the Amazing Cube" (1983)
The adult podcast about children's cartoons
A chronological tour through the best and most noteworthy Marvel Comics, from 1961 to today
"Why they needed to make a puzzle cube into a mysterious goblin pursued by an angry fisherman is anybody's guess, but our guess is probably cocaine" - Austin, on "Rubik, the Amazing Cube" (1983)
"Two adult pairs of legs somehow sire bovine and galline offspring. So uncomfortable is the origin of these children that, as cosmic penance, they are forced to contend daily with the many and varied forms of the devil himself." - Andy, on Cow and Chicken (1997)
"This banger brought to you by composer Noam Kaniel, whom you will find influencing all manner of classic Saturday morning boys such as He-Man, Superman, and those X-Men" - Kyle, on Mysterious Cities of Gold (1982)
"Coming up this week is a bass line so plump and leathery you can rest your weary dogs on it and forget about all your troubles, and when the synth kicks in, baby you got a stew going." - Rory Voie, on "Spartakus and the Sun Beneath the Sea" (1985).
Austin says: "Mighty Ducks (1996) literally adapts nothing but the title of the film and infuses the hockey action with the kind of high-sticking that will get impressionable kids in trouble with their gym teachers."
For our most recent episode, our secret, shadowy fourth collaborator Kyle Levien surprised us with a fully realized version of 2Cheez's hit, "Tapin' Up Your Robins," off the new album "Bird/Tape." And what a banger it is.

Have you ever woken up in the middle of the night and wondered "what if homer's odyssey but space"?? Andy has you covered with this week's Friday Banger. Cause if there's anything space was missing, it's greek columns.
Kyle has chosen a treat for us with today's Friday Banger, "Archie's Weird Mysteries" (1999) - brought to you by the same minds that scored such wildly successful toons as Sonic Underground, The Wacky World of Tex Avery, and Sabrina's Secret Life.
Today's Friday Banger is the intro to Mazinger Z (1972): "Sometimes a banger is so iconic and solid it bears no greater explanation than to warn you to tie your shoes and straighten up your socks or they'll be blown clean off." - Rory
Austin says: "Not every hero is created solely by target demographic buzzwords, so thank god 1980 gave us Sport Billy, a go-getting time-traveling space athlete who fights for good sportsmanship."
"Christina Milian's masterpiece, 'Call Me, Beep Me' is the soundtrack to a generation. Written for 'Kim Possible' in 2002, it deftly captured the terrifying uncertainty of the time. Teens cried out, 'We all have beepers, but cell phones are becoming ubiquitous; what means of communication will I use in this confusing era?' Christina responded with a resounding: 'Both'." *

Kyle says: "Presented without comment, only sweet teen air guitar moves." (Biker Mice from Mars, 1993)
In honor of our newest addition to the Saturday Morning Tuesdays regular lineup, our Friday Banger this week is "Silverhawks" (1986). This song inspired our show's theme music, and it's one of the finest 80s intros of ALL TIME.
yes, I know it's Saturday, shhhhh
"Remember that time the 80s forgot that all the hard work that went into spoiling the minds of children would go to waste if they couldn't keep them suckling at the teat of the cartoon cash-cow during the 90s? WildC.A.T.s (1994) is a shining example of edgy, teen-oriented cartoon goodness." - Rory Voie
"The Adventures of the Galaxy Rangers (1986) is the the best Kenny Loggins-fueled, ass-blasting cowboy space jam this side of Neptune and I will fight you with a sword if you disagree" - Austin, who will definitely fight you, no foolins
For this week's Friday Banger, Andy wants us to consider the investment potential in 1983's "The Biskitts."
"Worried about your financial future? Take advantage of this opportunity today, and entrust all of your treasure to a strange species of tiny intelligent dogs, small enough to ride frogs as transportation, who live in a swamp and are apparently impossible to find."
Rory had this to say about this week's Friday Banger:
"When I think about Orbots, I think about Frank Herbert's Dune. Just look at all those dunes in this song and tell me you can't figure out how this is super dune-y.
This is just like when Duncan Idaho taught Muad'Dib how to use his laser shield."
Whoa look it's a special Saturday Friday Banger! It's getting posted today, instead of yesterday, is what's special about it. On purpose, not a mistake. Definitely not because I was up too late on Thursday night seeing Star Wars and forgot.
This week Kyle has chosen "Rude Dog and the Dweebs" (1989), a show he says was "truly the peak of the cool 'tude movement."
Today's Friday Banger is potentially the SMT crew's favorite cartoon intro of all time: Pandamonium (1982).
Austin picked it, but he was, quote, "on a mountain in Maui" when I asked him for a comment. So, all I got was "Something something Mondraggor , ummmm, something about a steaming pile of infodump, I'm on a mountain right now," followed by a selfie of him on a mountain.
Hey, Andy here, hijacking this week's Friday Banger to keep my Hey Arnold! good times rollin. Have you watched The Jungle Movie yet? NO? WHAT ARE YOU DOING. Go buy it on iTunes or YouTube or wherever you like buying things. If there's interest, we might get a 6th season out of Craig...
But for real, "Hey Arnold!" (1996) has one of the best theme songs of all time. Jim Lang is a magician.
